ARTIST NOTES

The colors shown on your computer screen do not reflect the subtle color changes and textures of each painting. All monitors are different, as I have found out! The originals dance with bright, playful, jewel like, elegant textures and color…. and far exceed the images on your screen.

I have been working “in suites” of paintings and collages for over 35 years. The pieces from each suite have a harmony with one another; it is not unusual for collectors to buy more than one or two pieces.

Not all of my works are created in suites, the larger paintings are done one at a time and normally glass is not needed for framing. On occasion I do paint smaller pieces that aren’t part of a suite.

PAINTINGS

Many of my paintings are acrylic on canvas with oil pastel. I often use the canvas as a watercolorist uses paper (without gesso). Because the oil pastel is always awake (tacky) these pieces need to be framed under glass for protection. A new product I am presently experimenting with seals the oil pastel so the painting doesn’t need glass protection. At this time I am not impressed with the results.

Unlike other painters many of my paintings are not stretched and often times have fringed borders. I love playing which bring more life to my paintings. Even though I frame my pieces a certain way… I leave it to the galleries or collectors to decide whether to leave the borders showing or not. Each piece speaks to me, the gallery and /or collector as to how it can be framed. Although I am particularly fond of the small jewel paintings be shown in full, the pieces seem to beckon the eye and dance when they float in the frame.

Because many of my paintings are not stretched they frequently are not perfectly square.  This shrinkage occurs after the scrubbing of the canvas before painting. I love the result, which adds more life to the paintings and stops them from becoming static!

Many of my larger works are usually stretched and rarely need glass or Plexiglas framing.

PASTELS

All pastels are done on Arches Cover 100% cotton stock. I normally use chalk pastels along with a small amount of oil pastel.  Presently, most of my pastels are  “sea grass and sky images”. They are seasonal because of my chemical sensitivities only allow me to do these pieces outdoors in the summer and fall. Because of this my pastels, over the years, have become smaller and smaller… on occasion I will do commissioned pastel suites up to 22 x 30” each.
